LAHORE – In a pointed yet unnamed reference to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari delivered a stark message during a rally in South Punjab. Speaking to PPP workers, Zardari advised that instead of complaining about prison conditions, one should embrace jail as a place of worship and devotion.

The comment, widely reported across Pakistani media including Dawn, comes amid ongoing political tensions. Zardari reminded his audience of a true leader’s duty: to fight for the party and people, even if it means enduring imprisonment. ‘They start whining about jail after just 18 months,’ he said, alluding to Khan’s grievances over eye pain and lack of milk. ‘A real leader sacrifices without such complaints.’

Drawing from personal experience, Zardari shared how he spent 14 years behind bars without losing heart. ‘Jail is a place for ibadat (worship), and prayers from there are accepted,’ he emphasized, urging resilience.

Zardari also rallied workers not to fear arrest, pledging to rebuild Pakistan. He reiterated PPP’s ambition to win two-thirds majority and install Bilawal Bhutto as prime minister.

Meanwhile, concerns over Khan’s health escalate. Amicus curiae Salman Safdar, after meeting him in Adiala Jail, reported severe vision loss in Khan’s right eye – only 15% sight remaining. PTI supporters protest in parliament, amplifying the political standoff.
