In a significant move, the interim government of Bangladesh, under the leadership of Professor Muhammad Yunus, has prohibited media outlets from airing any statements made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The decision is a result of the government’s concerns regarding the content and potential impact of Hasina’s speeches.
The press branch of the government stated that some media houses ignored court orders. The government’s statement indicated that the speech contained misleading and provocative claims. The government also cited the International Crimes Tribunal’s findings against Sheikh Hasina, including ongoing accusations of crimes against humanity. The statement also refers to the Awami League’s activities being restricted. The government warned that the publication of activities, speeches or propaganda from any banned organization or its leaders would be met with legal action, under the 2009 anti-terrorism law.
