Senior IAS officer Govind Mohan will be appointed as the new Union Home Secretary. Govind Mohan will replace Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who has completed his 5-year term. Govind Mohan is a 1989 batch Sikkim cadre IAS officer.
He has done B.Tech from Banaras Hindu University. Apart from this, he has done PG Diploma from IIM Ahmedabad. Earlier he was working as Union Culture Secretary. Mohan has joined the Union Home Ministry as an officer on special duty. He has a lot of experience in different roles within both Sikkim and the Central Government.

Prior to his new appointment, Mohan worked as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. He oversaw key divisions, including Union Territories. He played a key role in managing the implementation of health protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuring effective coordination with state governments. The immediate challenge before Mohan will be to work closely with the Election Commission to ensure smooth and safe assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The Election Commission has announced to start the voting process in the Union Territory in three phases from September 18.

During his tenure as Union Culture Secretary, Mohan played an important role in launching 2 important initiatives of the Modi government. This was Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan. Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav was launched as a celebration of 75 years of India’s independence. At the same time, Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan promotes the display of the national flag. Under this, Tiranga Yatra, rallies and races are organized. Under the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative, the production of flags has created many employment opportunities for women in self-help groups (SHGs).
