Wealthy Foreign Nationals Targeted: Trump Administration’s ‘Gold Card’ for US Residency

The US government, under the Trump administration, has unveiled a new immigration program designed to attract wealthy individuals globally. The program, known as the ‘Gold Card,’ offers permanent residency to those willing to invest USD 1 million. Corporations sponsoring employees will need to invest USD 2 million per employee. The initiative replaces existing employment-based green card categories and will make 80,000 visas available. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick emphasized the program’s focus on attracting individuals who can make significant financial contributions. Gold Card holders will enjoy full rights, including the ability to live and work permanently in the United States, with a pathway to citizenship. They will be subject to global taxation, similar to US citizens, potentially deterring those with complex international finances. The vetting process will be extensive and expensive, costing an additional USD 15,000 per applicant. The program excludes individuals posing national security threats or with criminal records. Corporate sponsors face specific retention rules regarding employee departures. A ‘Trump Platinum Card’ program is also planned, but without a path to permanent residency and requiring a larger investment.
