A White House trade advisor has leveled strong criticism at India, claiming the nation is indirectly supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine by buying discounted oil, refining it, and then selling the refined products at a profit. This, according to the advisor, allows Russia to fund its military operations. The advisor also raised concerns over India’s growing relationship with China. However, the advisor acknowledged India’s importance as a leader. This contrasts with the viewpoints of a former US Ambassador to the UN, who champions a robust US-India partnership to counteract China’s influence. In addition, a well-known economist has denounced the US tariffs on India, deeming them counterproductive to US foreign policy goals. These tariffs were partially imposed due to India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil, a move that has drawn condemnation from Russian officials. India’s External Affairs Minister responded to the US criticism by pointing out that the US itself has asked India to assist in stabilizing global energy markets and buy Russian oil.
