JD Vance, the US Vice President, stated that Russia must “wake up and accept reality” concerning its ongoing war against Ukraine, during a recent interview on Fox News. He highlighted the US’s efforts to pursue peace. These remarks followed comments from President Donald Trump, who suggested Ukraine is in a strong position to win the war and could reclaim all its territory if it maintains support. Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently met at the United Nations General Assembly. The conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion, has caused extensive damage and loss of life. The war has resulted in substantial military casualties, with estimates indicating over 250,000 Russian soldiers and 60,000 to 100,000 Ukrainian troops killed. Civilian casualties are also mounting, with the UN reporting over 14,100 Ukrainian civilian deaths. Vance emphasized the high death toll and the lack of progress, highlighting the need for a peaceful resolution and the unwillingness of Putin to meet with Trump and Zelensky.
