New Delhi is emerging as America’s indispensable ally, according to US Ambassador Sergio Gor, even as trade frictions and tariff threats cast shadows over bilateral ties. In a candid address, Gor underscored India’s unparalleled importance, signaling renewed momentum in negotiations set to resume on January 13.

The envoy’s remarks come at a pivotal moment. The Trump administration has repeatedly criticized India’s Russian oil purchases, proposing steep 500% tariffs on offenders including India and China. Public spats from the US President have occasionally stung Indian sentiments, yet Gor painted a picture of unbreakable partnership.

‘India is the world’s largest democracy, and getting any deal across the finish line isn’t easy, but we’re committed,’ Gor stated. Trade talks, ongoing since 2025, have stalled, but both sides remain engaged. Beyond commerce, collaboration spans security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health.

Gor highlighted the personal rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump. ‘I’ve traveled the world with President Trump, and I can say their friendship is genuine,’ he affirmed. True partners, he noted, navigate differences to forge ahead.

In a major announcement, Gor unveiled India’s invitation to join PaxSilica, a US-led initiative launched last month. Aimed at building a secure supply chain for critical minerals, energy, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, AI, and logistics, the group already includes Japan, South Korea, the UK, and Israel. India will become a full member next month, bolstering technological and economic synergies.

As ambassador, Gor’s agenda is ambitious: advancing a strategic partnership where both nations contribute strength, respect, and leadership. This vision promises to deepen ties, transcending trade hurdles and positioning India as America’s foremost collaborator in a complex global landscape.
