Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has provided assurances to the United States regarding the steadfastness of the February 12 general election date. Speaking with US Special Envoy Sergio Gor, Yunus addressed the prevailing atmosphere of unrest and attacks on minority groups, asserting the interim government’s readiness to tackle any disruptions. He articulated that Bangladeshi citizens are keen to exercise their franchise, a right they have allegedly been denied under previous administrations. The hour-long discussion also delved into trade and tariff negotiations, where Yunus celebrated a reduction in US import duties on Bangladeshi goods. The volatile political climate, including the controversial killing of activist Sharif Osman Hadi and the large public response to his death, was also a significant topic. Yunus expressed confidence that the election would be free, fair, and peaceful, serving as a model for the nation, while also pointing to alleged efforts by supporters of the former government to derail the process. Several key government officials were privy to the conversation.
