Sergio Gor, the US’s next ambassador to India, indicated that a trade agreement between the two nations is close, even with ongoing disputes over tariffs. Gor emphasized that the Trump administration wants India to cease buying Russian oil. He said, “We are not very far apart on an agreement on these tariffs.” He added, “Getting India to stop buying Russian oil is the top priority of this administration.” Gor also expressed confidence that a favorable agreement would be reached, with discussions on specifics in progress. He anticipates the issue to be resolved within the next few weeks. Gor described India as a strategic partner, highlighting its importance in regional stability, economic development, and shared security interests. He also underlined the strong relationship between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, referring to their “incredible relationship.” Gor currently holds the position of Director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel. He was nominated by President Trump in August to be the next US ambassador to India, a nomination pending confirmation by the US Senate. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, introducing Gor, highlighted the strong relationship between the US and India, recognizing it as one of the best global alliances.
