President Vladimir Putin has announced the successful testing of Russia’s Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile, a weapon system with a demonstrated range of 14,000 kilometers. During a recent test, the missile remained airborne for around 15 hours, showcasing its exceptional endurance. The Burevestnik is distinct due to its nuclear propulsion, which provides virtually limitless flight capability, unlike traditional missiles that rely on finite fuel. This unique power source allows the missile to execute complex maneuvers and fly at extremely low altitudes, making it exceptionally challenging for current missile defense systems like THAAD or Patriot to track and intercept. Putin first detailed this project in 2018, and the recent successful test flight validates its operational potential. The strategic implications are considerable, as the Burevestnik could bypass existing defenses and present a novel threat. Despite some international skepticism and environmental concerns raised by experts, the successful long-range flight of the Burevestnik missile signifies a significant advancement in Russian military capabilities.
