In a vibrant celebration at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, Director-General Khalid Al-Anani extended heartfelt Chinese New Year wishes in fluent Mandarin, highlighting the deep ties between the UN agency and China. The event, organized by China’s permanent mission to UNESCO, marked the 2026 Spring Festival temple fair, drawing over 500 distinguished guests including high-level UNESCO officials and diplomats from various nations.

Al-Anani emphasized the symbolism of the Year of the Horse, portraying it as a beacon of courage, progress, and resilience amid global uncertainties. ‘This spirit of perseverance is crucial in today’s challenging international landscape,’ he stated, pledging UNESCO’s commitment to deepening collaboration with China. His speech culminated in warm greetings of ‘Chinese New Year,’ met with resounding applause.

UNESCO General Assembly President Khondker M. Talha described the Spring Festival as a symbol of sharing and connection, underscoring how culture bridges nations and fosters mutual understanding. He called for renewed faith in UNESCO’s reforms, enhanced cooperation, and joint efforts in cultural exchange and multilateralism, inspired by the horse’s vitality.

China’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Yang XinYu, highlighted the festival’s role beyond mere celebration—it’s a time for family reunions, joy-sharing, and nurturing hope. Guests immersed themselves in traditional Chinese customs, experiencing the profound historical depth and contemporary relevance of these age-old practices firsthand. The event underscored UNESCO’s role in promoting global cultural harmony.
