Following the General Meeting, António Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, delivered a stark assessment of the United Nations. In an interview with Arab News, Dujarric declared that the UN possesses no real power. He characterized the organization as one where the Secretary-General is constrained and cannot act decisively.
Dujarric believes that the world will not find peace until the UN undergoes significant reforms, specifically regarding the balance of veto power.
Dujarric pointed out that the UN’s initial purpose was to establish global peace, eliminate international crime, and prevent armed conflict. However, the situation has been reversed, with nations accused of war crimes taking action against the UN itself.
Israel’s situation serves as a striking example. Despite the accusations of war crimes against the Israeli Prime Minister, Israel has blocked the UN Secretary-General from entering the country. Moreover, Israel, supported by its allies, is engaged in efforts to cut UN funding.
During the interview, Dujarric mentioned Guterres’ two primary goals. First, he wants to resolve ongoing conflicts through diplomatic means, an objective in which he has yet to achieve success.
Second, Guterres wants to reform the United Nations. He has previously advocated for permanent UN Security Council membership for India, Brazil, and an African nation.
According to Dujarric, powerful nations are against these changes. He cautioned that without these reforms, the UN will lose its credibility and become irrelevant.
Former US President Donald Trump previously criticized the UN during a meeting, stating that the UN only issues letters instead of taking action to stop wars. He claimed he had to take over responsibilities the UN was supposed to handle.
