Putin stated that the Ukraine conflict was a consequence of Western policies, which for years disregarded Russia’s security concerns, and created an anti-Russian bridgehead in Ukraine. He also restated his position that a resolution must address the origins of the crisis and consider the existing territorial situation.
During their conversation, the leaders also considered the recent escalation between Israel and Iran, agreeing that diplomacy remained the best approach. They agreed to work together to align their positions. Furthermore, they acknowledged their shared obligation to ensure peace, security, and to uphold the worldwide nuclear non-proliferation regime, specifically addressing Iran’s right to develop peaceful nuclear energy.
France has been a primary supporter of Kyiv through the conflict, but recent statements by Macron indicate a possible change in strategy, acknowledging constraints and proposing a dialogue with Moscow.
