Ahead of his highly anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, former US President Donald Trump issued a message highlighting the high stakes involved. The summit, taking place on August 15 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, is expected to have considerable implications for the war in Ukraine and the overall security situation in Europe. Trump’s post on Truth Social, which simply stated “High Stakes!”, was made just hours before his departure for the meeting. Before the meeting, Trump indicated his belief that Putin is ready to work towards peace. Responding to questions about potential incentives to end the war, Trump stated that this would be part of their discussions. He emphasized the significance of the meeting for both the US and Russia, and especially the potential to save lives. Subsequent talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders are planned, which Trump considers of great importance.
