US President Donald Trump asserted that the relationship between the United States and China remains “extremely strong” after holding a telephone conversation with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. The wide-ranging discussion covered topics such as the war in Ukraine, trade relations, and the politically charged issue of Taiwan.

Trump shared his positive assessment of the call on Truth Social, highlighting a “very important” trade development for American farmers and reinforcing his view of a solid Sino-American bond.

According to Chinese state media, Xi Jinping informed Trump that Taiwan’s return to Chinese rule is a crucial element of the established international order following World War II. This discourse occurs in a context of rising tensions, particularly after Japanese officials signaled potential military engagement if China were to take action against Taiwan, a stance that has drawn sharp criticism from Beijing and worsened bilateral ties.

Xi also reportedly stressed the importance of China and the US working together to uphold the principles of the Allied victory in World War II, acknowledging their shared history. The US policy on Taiwan involves opposing the use of force and ensuring the island possesses adequate defensive capabilities, though Trump has maintained strategic ambiguity on direct troop deployment. His administration had previously approved a significant arms sale to Taiwan, which China decried as a violation of its sovereignty.

While the leaders discussed trade, specific agreements were not publicly detailed. Chinese accounts indicate Xi expressed satisfaction with the general trajectory of US-China relations post-summit and called for continued constructive progress. The Ukraine situation was also addressed, with Xi calling for a resolution addressing the conflict’s underlying issues.
