In a major diplomatic outreach, US President Donald Trump held an extensive phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing it as ‘extremely excellent’ and covering a wide array of critical issues. The discussion, which Trump hailed as a positive signal for US-China ties over the next three years, delved into trade imbalances, energy purchases, military cooperation, and global hotspots like Taiwan and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Speaking from the White House on Wednesday, Trump detailed the ‘long and in-depth’ dialogue on his Truth Social platform. Key topics included China’s plans to ramp up imports of American soybeans to 20 million tons this season and commit to 25 million tons next, alongside boosted purchases of US oil and gas. Aviation supply chains and engine deliveries also featured prominently, with Trump noting all aspects were ‘highly positive.’

The leaders touched on Trump’s anticipated April visit to China, a milestone in bilateral diplomacy during his current term. Personal rapport shone through as Trump emphasized his strong relationship with Xi, underscoring its importance for sustained dialogue. ‘We both understand how crucial it is to maintain this,’ he posted.

Global security loomed large, with exchanges on the Russia-Ukraine war, Iran’s tensions, and Taiwan’s delicate status—highlighting high-level focus on Indo-Pacific stability. Economic threads wove through, from agricultural exports to manufacturing ties, signaling potential de-escalation in trade frictions.

As the world’s top economies, US-China interactions ripple across global markets and geopolitics. Trump’s optimism points to fruitful outcomes ahead, even as White House statements remain sparse. This call reaffirms top-tier engagement amid competition and cooperation, setting the stage for strategic realignments.
