Negotiations between the United States and India regarding trade have been postponed. The postponement comes amid escalating disputes over tariffs, but a rescheduling of the talks is likely.

The US team’s visit, originally scheduled for August 25-29, was intended to advance discussions on a bilateral trade agreement. The urgency of these talks has increased due to new US tariffs on Indian goods.

The upcoming round of discussions would have been the sixth in the series of trade talks. The timing was strategic, coinciding with the implementation of a new 25% tariff on Indian goods, set for August 27. The aim was to finalize the trade deal in the following months.

Sources have indicated that a rescheduled meeting is probable.

In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Modi promoted ‘swadeshi’ products and voiced strong support for farmers and fishermen.

Trump stated that Russia lost India as a client for oil after the US announced tariffs on Indian goods. He suggested that secondary tariffs might not be imposed on countries still importing Russian oil.

These developments follow the US’s imposition of a 25% tariff on Indian goods, on top of existing tariffs. The new tariffs are due to come into effect on August 27.
