Syria is set to hold parliamentary elections this coming Sunday. These elections are a watershed moment for the country, being the first since the departure of former President Bashar al-Assad. Assad’s government was toppled in December 2024 after a swift rebel advance, thus ending the Assad family’s five-decade grip on power. The interim government is now led by Ahmad al-Shara.

These elections are seen as a vital step toward democratic reforms in Syria. However, it’s important to note that it’s an indirect election, meaning citizens will not directly vote. Surprisingly, many Syrians are unaware of these upcoming elections.
