An attempt to poison former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad occurred in Russia. Assad was promptly taken to a hospital, and his health has improved. Assad was forced from power in Syria 10 months before this incident, subsequently relocating to Moscow. The Russian government is providing security for Assad and his family. The poisoning is speculated to be a means to tarnish Russia’s image and lay blame. The Syrian Human Rights Organization has confirmed Assad’s discharge from a hospital located near Moscow. The former president’s brother, Maher, paid him a visit. There has been no official response from the Russian government regarding the situation.
