The Supreme Court is set to consider a petition from Donald Trump regarding his attempt to alter birthright citizenship. The case stems from an executive order issued by Trump, which aimed to restrict the automatic granting of citizenship to those born in the United States. The Trump administration maintains that the current system is flawed and has damaging effects. The Justice Department has appealed several lower court decisions that opposed the executive order. The former president’s order, signed in January, sought to deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. unless at least one parent held U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residency. This action directly challenges the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to all persons born within the U.S. The Supreme Court is being asked to address the matter during its next term, scheduled to begin on October 6th.
