In a strategic move to bolster India’s air defense capabilities, Israel’s RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems has proposed integrating its cutting-edge Sky Sting Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) with the domestically produced HAL Tejas Mk1A fighter jet. This next-generation missile offers an extended engagement range of up to 250 kilometers, providing a critical advantage in aerial combat scenarios and potentially countering advanced threats like the Chinese PL-15. This offer underscores the deepening defense ties between India and Israel.

Defense industry insiders suggest that the integration process for the Sky Sting onto the Tejas Mk1A is expected to be remarkably quick, estimated at about 18 months. This accelerated timeline is facilitated by the Tejas Mk1A’s existing advanced systems, such as its ELM-2052 AESA radar and Digital Flight Control Computer (DFCC). The requirement for live-firing trials is anticipated to be minimal before the missile is cleared for operational use. The proposal was reportedly put forth during significant defense discussions in Tel Aviv in July 2025, with similar integration options extended to India’s Su-30MKI fleet. Initial quantities of 200-300 missiles could be available by mid-2026.

The Sky Sting missile is engineered for long-range dominance, weighing between 180-200 kilograms and propelled by a three-stage rocket motor for sustained high velocity. It employs a combination of GPS and inertial navigation for mid-course accuracy, switching to an active RF seeker for precise targeting in the final engagement phase. A key feature is its two-way data link, empowering pilots with mid-flight target updates. The missile is equipped with a powerful high-explosive warhead designed to overcome electronic countermeasures and neutralize enemy aircraft. The deployment roadmap includes captive flight trials within six months, followed by live testing, with the aim of operational service by mid-2027. This integration promises a substantial leap in air superiority for India’s air force.
