New Delhi witnessed a significant diplomatic engagement on Friday as Seychelles Vice President Sebastian Pillay called on India’s Vice President CP Radhakrishnan at the Vice President’s Enclave. The courtesy meeting underscored the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations, especially meaningful as they approach the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026.
Both leaders delved into key areas of cooperation, placing special emphasis on enhancing maritime security and defense collaboration. They explored opportunities in transshipment and ways to improve market access for mutual economic benefits. As closest maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean, India and Seychelles recognize the strategic imperative of maritime domain cooperation.
Discussions also spotlighted renewable energy, with India’s expertise in solar and other renewables poised to bolster Seychelles’ initiatives. Consensus emerged on advancing solar projects and sustainable energy solutions tailored to island needs. Health and housing sectors drew attention too, focusing on people-centric developments that deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
Reflecting on five decades of ties since 1976, the leaders expressed satisfaction with steady progress fueled by diaspora links, cultural bonds, and robust people-to-people contacts. They reaffirmed commitment to unlocking the partnership’s full potential in the years ahead.
This interaction coincided with the India AI Impact Summit 2026, where Pillay represented the Global South. He arrived in New Delhi on February 18, welcomed by Minister of State for Jal Shakti Dr. Raj Bhushan Chaudhary. Reciprocally, Vice President Radhakrishnan visited Seychelles in October 2025, engaging with President Patrick Herminie and Vice President Pillay, further cementing these enduring bonds.
