Moscow’s skies lit up overnight as Russian air defenses claimed a decisive victory against a massive Ukrainian drone assault. In a statement that underscored the escalating tensions, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced that its forces intercepted and destroyed 170 Ukrainian drones launched in a coordinated attack spanning Saturday night into Sunday morning. Among these, 27 were barreling straight toward the Russian capital.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin took to social media to confirm the interception of those 27 drones aimed at the city, praising the swift response of air defense units. The operation unfolded across multiple regions, with Russian systems neutralizing the threats before they could inflict damage.
Flight disruptions rippled through the region as a precaution. Rosaviatsiya, Russia’s civil aviation authority, imposed temporary restrictions on arrivals and departures at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport and Kaluga Airport in the Kaluga region. These measures ensured passenger safety amid the heightened alert.
On the offensive front, Russian forces struck back hard. The Defense Ministry detailed precision attacks on Ukrainian energy and transport infrastructure, sites used for training and launching long-range drones, as well as temporary deployment areas for Ukrainian armed forces and foreign mercenaries.
From the other side, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy painted a grim picture of Russian aggression. In a Saturday address, he revealed that Russia unleashed nearly 430 drones of various types and a significant number of missiles toward Ukraine, including 13 ballistic missiles out of a total of 68. Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept 58 of these incoming threats, according to preliminary data.
Zelenskyy used his platform on X to hammer home the urgency. ‘Every such night of Russian strikes reminds all our partners that air defense and missiles for it are a daily necessity,’ he posted. He called for accelerated agreements on missile supplies and ramped-up production of air defense missiles, stressing that no deal could afford delays.
The Ukrainian leader warned of Russia’s strategy to exploit conflicts in the Middle East for further devastation in Europe and Ukraine. ‘We must stay fully aware of the real level of threat and prepare accordingly,’ he urged, pushing for European production of missiles capable of countering ballistic threats and other systems vital for protecting lives, regardless of global distractions. Zelenskyy thanked international supporters, affirming Europe’s capacity to deliver reliable security.
