The National September 11 Memorial & Museum has successfully tested its yearly ‘Tribute in Light’ installation. The lights will illuminate the sky this week as a memorial to the victims of the 9/11 attacks and as a celebration of New York’s strength. The event is organized to observe the 24th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Beth Hillman, president of the Memorial and Museum, described ‘Tribute in Light’ as a symbol of remembrance for the approximately 3,000 victims of 9/11. She emphasized that, 24 years later, over 100 million Americans were too young to personally recall the events of that day, reinforcing the need to raise public awareness. Antoula Catsimatides, who lost her brother in the attacks, stated that the light-tribute has become a symbol of hope and courage for New Yorkers. The light installation was first presented on March 11, 2002, six months following the attack on the Twin Towers, while rescue operations were ongoing at Ground Zero. The illumination is planned to continue annually from the evening of September 11 to the morning of September 12 through 2025. It is visible from up to 60 miles from Lower Manhattan, and is viewable from Long Island and New Jersey under favorable weather conditions. This impactful tribute was the result of a collaboration between The Municipal Art Society and Creative Time, with input from various artists. The lighting was designed by Space Cannon, and the project was managed by Michael Ahern Production Services (MAPS).
