In a landmark visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Namibia, concluding his five-nation tour and representing the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly three decades. The welcoming event took place at the State House, with the Indian national anthem playing in his honor.

PM Modi also paid respects at the ‘Heroes’ Acre’ National War Memorial, established by President Sam Nujoma to honor the nation’s heroes.

During discussions with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the leaders addressed various facets of the India-Namibia relationship. They focused on collaboration in areas such as digital technology, defense, security, agriculture, healthcare, education, and critical minerals. The leaders also sought to boost trade, energy, and petrochemical linkages. PM Modi acknowledged Namibia’s assistance in Project Cheetah.

PM Modi’s arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport was marked by a warm reception. He also greeted the Indian diaspora, acknowledging their cultural ties. The visit promises to bolster the historical bond between India and Namibia, stemming from India’s backing of Namibia’s independence.

Namibia’s significant mineral resources, including uranium, copper, and rare earth minerals, position it as a key player in the global mining sector. Bilateral trade between India and Namibia reached USD 814 million in 2023-24. The majority of the trade was from Indian exports. Substantial Indian investments are present in the mining sector in Namibia. The translocation of cheetahs from Namibia to India is a notable example of cooperation. Both countries are pursuing expanded collaboration in the areas of mining, energy, health, agriculture, and infrastructure. The negotiations regarding a Preferential Trade Arrangement with the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), coordinated by Namibia, are ongoing.
