Palestine is seeking to join the BRICS group, applying for membership as part of its effort to strengthen its global presence. BRICS, the economic alliance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is in the process of expanding its member states.

Palestinian Ambassador to Russia, Abdel Hafiz Nofal, shared that Palestine is exploring the possibility of initially becoming a guest member, with the ultimate goal of achieving full membership. Nofal mentioned in an interview with Russian media that Palestine anticipates starting as a guest member before moving towards full membership.

BRICS, initially formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded its membership, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates in 2024. Indonesia joined the group in 2025. Now, Palestine, along with other nations, is looking to become part of BRICS.

China has expressed a positive stance on Palestine’s application. During a press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jianqun said that BRICS is an important platform for collaboration among emerging economies and developing nations. It also helps in promoting democracy in international relations. China welcomes more countries with shared values to join BRICS. This statement has been viewed as a diplomatic advantage for Palestine. Analysts believe that Palestine’s membership in BRICS could lead to more support from the Global South countries.

Recently, at the UN General Assembly, several countries like Canada, Australia, Portugal, and the UK have acknowledged Palestine as an independent nation. Israel has strongly criticized this recognition. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated clearly at the General Assembly that they will not accept a “terrorist nation.”
