Addressing the devastating floods, Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has placed the blame on his own government, clearing India of any responsibility for the disaster. During a discussion on a local TV channel, Asif outlined the government’s failings, noting that a meager portion of the funds designated for flood mitigation had been spent. He defended India, suggesting that the flow of water is beyond anyone’s control, even with strategic intentions. He acknowledged that India’s actions, such as the opening of the Salal Dam gates, led to excess water in Pakistan, but he underscored the internal factors at the heart of the crisis. Asif also pointed out the issue of illegal construction and encroachment upon waterways. He emphasized that the failure to prevent building in flood-prone areas directly contributed to the widespread damage. In addition, he commented that corruption was a root cause, and that the consequences of decades of mismanagement are now being felt.
