ISLAMABAD – Chaos erupted in Pakistan’s National Assembly on Monday as President Asif Ali Zardari’s address turned into a spectacle of opposition fury. Zardari, delivering his ninth joint session speech, attempted to project strength against India, but was drowned out by chants of ‘Go Zardari Go’ and demands for Imran Khan’s release.
The session began with Zardari emphasizing Pakistan’s resolve to maintain peace, warning that no domestic or foreign power would be allowed to use neighboring regions to disrupt stability. His rhetoric quickly shifted to veiled threats against India, boasting that Pakistan had only shown a fraction of its military capabilities to both India and Afghanistan.
As a self-proclaimed responsible nuclear power, Zardari underscored Pakistan’s ability to defend itself when necessary. However, his bravado fell flat as opposition lawmakers, led by PTI supporters, disrupted proceedings with relentless slogans. The chamber echoed with calls for former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s immediate release, highlighting deep internal divisions.
Tensions were further fueled by criticism of Pakistan’s participation in a U.S.-led Gaza peace board initiated by President Donald Trump. Opposition voices demanded withdrawal from what they called the ‘fake peace board,’ reflecting public outrage over Israel’s actions in Palestine and perceived alignment with American interests.
Zardari’s speech, meant to rally national unity amid challenges from Afghanistan and Iran, instead exposed Pakistan’s fragile political landscape. With economic woes and border conflicts mounting, the parliamentary showdown signals escalating instability that could undermine the government’s authority.
