Karachi’s political corridors are buzzing with fresh controversy over jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health and potential release. In a pointed remark, Sindh Province Minister and senior PPP leader Sharjeel Inam Memon has squarely blamed Khan himself for delaying his freedom, asserting that it hinges entirely on his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party’s behavior.

Speaking to reporters in Karachi on Sunday, Memon dismissed swirling rumors of backchannel deals between the government and PTI. ‘Imran Khan’s release is in his own hands and depends on PTI’s attitude,’ he stated categorically, as reported by leading daily Dawn. The minister urged PTI to shift focus from street protests outside Adiala Jail to genuine efforts for their leader’s liberation.

Memon expressed sympathy for Khan’s deteriorating health, particularly his recent diagnosis of Right Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) in late January, which has alarmed his family and supporters. ‘I have no information on his release, but this is the holy month of Ramadan, and I pray for his health, especially his eyes,’ he added graciously.

The exchange underscores deepening rifts in Pakistani politics. Khan has been incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since August 2023, serving a 14-year sentence in a corruption case involving state gifts. Additional charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act stem from the violent May 9, 2023, protests following his arrest.

Criticizing PTI’s tactics, Memon accused the party’s social media teams of targeting national leaders and institutions both domestically and abroad. ‘They should improve their language and word choice. Disagreement is fine, but abusing people’s families and using vulgar terms is unacceptable,’ he advised. ‘Change your mindset; it will help you greatly.’

This comes amid escalating rhetoric. Last week, PPP’s Central Punjab General Secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza warned PTI against character assassination, promising a strong retaliation. President Asif Ali Zardari, during a South Punjab tour, lambasted Khan, saying the ex-PM, who has served less than two years, should ‘face his sentence like a man’ instead of ordering street blockades.

Khan’s plight has garnered international attention, with 14 former cricket captains who played alongside him penning a letter demanding his release. Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s Political Affairs Advisor Rana Sanaullah hinted at failed deal attempts, claiming Khan rejected all overtures—a claim later walked back by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.

As Ramadan unfolds, the standoff persists, with PTI pressing for justice and the ruling coalition countering with accusations of disruption. Memon’s words signal no easy path ahead for reconciliation in Pakistan’s fractious political landscape.
