A wave of protests has swept across Pakistan, fueled by supporters of detained former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who are now directly challenging Army Chief Asim Munir. The demonstrations, stretching from the vicinity of Adiala Jail to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK), reflect widespread anger over alleged repression and the political circumstances surrounding Khan’s detention. Protesters are demanding Khan’s freedom, with allegations of brutal crackdowns by Munir’s forces circulating widely. Disturbing reports emerge of protesters near Adiala Jail being subjected to chemical-laced water, while the Pakistani government has yet to issue a formal statement. This developing situation indicates a severe breakdown in public trust. Adding to the concern, Imran Khan’s sons have publicly stated their father is being held in a ‘death cell.’ The movement has also resonated in POK, where thousands are demonstrating against chronic power shortages, communication shutdowns, and economic grievances, noting that most of POK’s power is supplied to Pakistan. India has officially condemned Pakistan’s internal turmoil at the United Nations, labeling the events a ‘constitutional coup’ and highlighting the international ramifications.
