Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has ignited controversy with his comments on the floods impacting Pakistan. His remarks, advising people to embrace the floodwater as a blessing and store it, have been widely condemned. During an interview, Asif characterized the floods as a positive development, given the global water scarcity, and encouraged citizens to view the situation as divine providence. He urged residents in affected areas to focus on water storage rather than protests and road closures. Asif indicated that constructing large-scale water storage infrastructure is not immediately feasible and suggested utilizing existing household resources. He attributed the flooding to the local government’s shortcomings, including the failure to control encroachments and regulate water pathways. The floods have caused widespread devastation, with approximately 2 million people affected in Punjab province alone, where 41 deaths have been reported. Nationally, the floods have claimed the lives of approximately 850 people, and the government’s relief efforts have been ineffective so far.
