In a shocking display of religious intolerance, a Christian laborer in Pakistan’s Punjab province narrowly escaped death after a coworker doused him with petrol and set him on fire. The incident, which occurred on January 21 in Bahawalpur, has ignited widespread outrage among minority rights advocates and highlighted the perilous conditions faced by religious minorities in the country.

Zahid Masih, a bonded laborer and security guard, became the target of vicious harassment from his colleague Mohammad Ali Azhar. According to reports, Azhar repeatedly subjected Masih to derogatory and blasphemous remarks targeting his Christian faith. When Masih stood up against the abuse, Azhar’s rage escalated into an attempt to burn him alive by pouring petrol on his face and igniting it.

Quick intervention by members of the local Christian community saved Masih’s life, though he sustained severe burns and profound psychological trauma. Eyewitnesses claim Azhar spewed hate speech during the assault, proclaiming religious superiority and making inflammatory statements about Christianity.

Voice of Pakistan Minority (VOPM), a leading advocacy group, condemned the attack in the strongest terms, calling it a stark reminder of the systemic discrimination plaguing minority workers in labor-intensive sectors. ‘This barbaric act exposes the deep-seated vulnerabilities of Christian laborers who face routine exploitation, verbal abuse, and now life-threatening violence,’ the organization stated.

The assault has sent shockwaves through Pakistan’s Christian community, already reeling from years of targeted persecution. Human rights organizations are demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment for the perpetrator, alongside comprehensive legal reforms to protect minorities.

Legal experts emphasize the need for institutional changes to combat religious intolerance, including stricter enforcement of anti-discrimination laws and sensitivity training in workplaces. As Masih continues his treatment, his case underscores the urgent requirement for societal transformation to ensure equal protection for all citizens regardless of faith.

This horrific incident serves as a clarion call for Pakistan’s authorities to address the root causes of minority persecution, fostering an environment where religious freedom is not just a constitutional promise but a lived reality.
