Ukraine’s attacks continue to target Russian infrastructure. A recent drone strike caused a large fire at one of Russia’s largest oil refineries. Russian and Ukrainian authorities have confirmed the attack on the Kirishi refinery, located in the Leningrad region. Surgutneftegas, the company operating the refinery, produces a substantial amount of crude oil annually. The ongoing conflict demonstrates the strategic importance of drones as a weapon. The use of drones has become increasingly significant for both sides. The conflict has already resulted in the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace, causing a response from NATO fighter jets. The Ukrainian General Staff reported explosions and fire at the refinery site, releasing an image of the blaze. Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported that three drones were shot down. Russia, despite being the world’s second-largest oil exporter, has experienced gasoline shortages in recent weeks due to increased demand and the impacts of Ukrainian drone strikes. These shortages have led to fuel rationing in some areas and restrictions on exports.
