Pakistan’s military landscape has been significantly reshaped with the creation of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) position, with Field Marshal Asim Munir named as the first incumbent. This pivotal role grants comprehensive authority over the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Munir will concurrently serve as Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), placing him at the apex of military command. This structural change, enabled by a constitutional amendment, introduces a five-year term for the CDF with the possibility of multiple extensions, and crucially, eliminates previous retirement age restrictions. The Presidential office confirmed the endorsement of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recommendation for Munir’s appointment as both COAS and CDF for a five-year duration. As CDF, Munir will direct the National Strategic Command, overseeing the nation’s nuclear assets and strategic missile programs. This consolidation of power replaces the abolished Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), and centralizes strategic military decision-making. The appointment had been the subject of much speculation. In a related development, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu’s tenure has been extended by two years. Field Marshal Munir’s appointment is historic, making him the first military officer to simultaneously hold the prestigious Field Marshal rank and the combined leadership of the army and defense forces.
