In Nepal, Gen Z is at the forefront of protests against the government. The demonstrations, which have drawn the attention of social media users worldwide, are fueled by a desire for government transparency and accountability. The protests were triggered by the government’s controversial ban on social media platforms. The protesters are using the ‘Jolly Roger’ flag, which has a cartoonish skull and crossbones wearing a straw hat. This flag is from the anime series ‘One Piece’. The flag’s symbolism of freedom, personal conviction, and friendship has resonated with the youth, expressing their defiance and unity. The flag’s use in Nepal mirrors its prior appearance in other protests, particularly in Indonesia. The anime ‘One Piece’ tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew. The protests began on September 8 in major cities, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj, after the government implemented the social media ban due to tax revenue and cybersecurity concerns. The demonstrations also resulted in violence. The government lifted the social media ban in response to the protests.
