New Delhi erupted with optimism on Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney on his first official visit to India. The high-level meeting at Hyderabad House marked a pivotal moment, injecting fresh energy, mutual trust, and positivity into bilateral relations.
In a post on X, PM Modi expressed delight at hosting Carney, praising his remarkable achievements both before and after assuming the premiership. ‘This visit is a significant milestone in India-Canada relations,’ Modi wrote. ‘Our discussion today focused on strengthening ties for the benefit of our peoples.’
The leaders engaged in extensive bilateral talks, culminating in the exchange of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). Carney echoed the enthusiasm, noting unprecedented governmental engagement between the two nations in recent times—more than in over two decades. ‘This isn’t just a refreshed relationship; it’s a partnership renewed with new intent, focus, and long-term vision,’ he stated.
A cornerstone of the discussions was the launch of a strategic energy partnership. Carney highlighted vast potential in energy trade, deepened collaboration in clean energy sectors like wind, solar, and hydrogen. ‘Canada plans to double its grid by 2050, and India can be a key partner in this expansion,’ he added. These agreements promise opportunities for workers, businesses, and future generations while safeguarding the planet.
Earlier, Carney met External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, who commended his commitment to forging ahead with partnerships. The visit comes at a crucial juncture as relations normalize, built on mutual respect for concerns, strong people-to-people ties, and complementary economic strengths. Both leaders agreed to advance a constructive, balanced collaboration.
This renewed vigor signals a promising chapter for India and Canada, two confident nations charting their shared future.
