In a resounding victory, Mia Amor Mottley has secured her third consecutive term as Prime Minister of Barbados, with her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) sweeping all 30 seats in the House of Assembly. State broadcaster CBC Barbados confirmed the results early Thursday, marking yet another dominant performance by Mottley’s leadership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India was quick to extend his congratulations via a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter). ‘Heartiest congratulations to Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on her third successive electoral triumph. India cherishes its longstanding friendship with Barbados, which continues to deepen across diverse areas of cooperation. I fondly recall our meeting during the India-CARICOM Summit 2024 and look forward to working together to strengthen our partnership for the benefit of our peoples,’ Modi posted.

The win underscores Mottley’s unyielding popularity amid challenges like economic recovery and climate vulnerabilities facing the Caribbean nation. Her oath-taking ceremony, administered by President Lieutenant Colonel The Most Honourable Jeffrey Bostic, was shared by Mottley herself online. ‘I humbly accept this mandate. I thank God, BLP, my voters, family, and people for your trust. Now is the time for our country to come together,’ she declared.

Global leaders joined the chorus of praise. French President Emmanuel Macron hailed Mottley’s re-election, emphasizing their joint efforts on climate justice. ‘Congratulations on being re-elected to lead Barbados. Together, we’ve advanced climate justice: funding boosted, rules changed, and the voices of the most affected nations amplified. Delighted to continue these fights with you,’ Macron wrote. Mottley responded gratefully, affirming Barbados’ commitment to the France partnership and ongoing climate work.

India-Barbados ties, established diplomatically in 1966, have grown stronger. Barbados honored PM Modi with its highest national award, the Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados, for his support during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nation’s 2021 transition to a republic and shared Commonwealth heritage further bind the two. High-level interactions, including Mottley’s engagements at Commonwealth and UN events alongside Indian ministerial visits in 2015 and 2018, signal evolving diplomatic momentum.

As Mottley embarks on her new term, expectations are high for continued progress in resilience-building, economic reforms, and international advocacy, particularly on climate fronts where small island states like Barbados play a pivotal role.
