New Delhi witnessed a landmark moment on Monday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney for high-level bilateral talks. The meeting culminated in the exchange of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), followed by a joint statement that underscored the deepening ties between the two nations.

Carney, in his address, highlighted the unprecedented engagement between Canada and India over the past year, surpassing levels seen in over two decades. ‘This isn’t just a new relationship; it’s an elevation of a valuable partnership with fresh intent, focus, and long-term vision,’ he declared. He portrayed it as a collaboration between two confident nations charting their own path forward.

Turning to India’s economic prowess, Carney lavished praise on PM Modi’s decade-long leadership. ‘Under your guidance, India has emerged as the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with per capita income surging at an unprecedented historical pace,’ he noted. Carney expressed Canada’s full understanding of India’s ambitions, referencing the G20 presidency theme of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’ as a blueprint for global success in tackling shared challenges.

The leaders announced a new strategic energy partnership aimed at boosting energy trade. This includes deepened cooperation in clean energy sectors like wind, solar, and hydrogen. Carney revealed Canada’s plans to double its grid capacity by 2050, positioning India as a key partner in this expansion. These agreements, he said, herald a prosperous era benefiting workers, businesses, and future generations while safeguarding the planet.

Carney was particularly impressed by India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), crediting Modi’s focus on inclusive growth. ‘India has become a global power while keeping every home in sight,’ he said, citing how digital payments revolutionized income support and crop insurance payouts. Canada aims to collaborate further to adopt this innovation.

Invoking Swami Vivekananda’s timeless words—’Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached’—Carney vowed relentless pursuit of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ and a ‘Strong Canada.’ The event also saw the exchange of documents for uranium concentrate supply between India’s Department of Atomic Energy and Cameco, in the presence of key figures including Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and others.

This partnership signals a new chapter of mutual prosperity and global leadership.
