US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has made it clear that the United States is pursuing an expanded strategic relationship with Pakistan. He emphatically stated that this diplomatic initiative will not negatively impact the “deep, historic, and important” bond the US shares with India. Rubio explained this dual-pronged strategy as a characteristic of modern diplomacy, where partnerships are cultivated pragmatically. “It’s part of a mature, pragmatic foreign policy,” he commented. He specifically addressed concerns by stating, “I don’t think anything we’re doing with Pakistan comes at the expense of our relationship or friendship with India, which is deep, historic, and important.” While recognizing the challenges inherent in dealing with India, Rubio highlighted the US commitment to identifying and developing collaborative opportunities. The established history of cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in counterterrorism, is seen as a foundation for future engagement. This significant statement comes at a time of heightened geopolitical attention on regional stability. In parallel, Rubio commented on trade matters, specifically India’s energy purchases. He acknowledged US calls for India to reduce its reliance on Russian oil but also recognized India’s stated intentions to diversify its energy suppliers, suggesting potential for increased US energy exports to India.
