A historic peace accord has been signed by Cambodia and Thailand, officially ending their recent military engagements. The agreement, a significant diplomatic achievement, was facilitated by the United States and signed during the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. President Donald Trump of the United States was present to witness the signing, calling it a momentous day for Southeast Asia. The core objective of this accord is to permanently cease fighting and create a robust structure for lasting peace in their disputed border territories, an area that has seen decades of contention. The agreement follows a concentrated five-day conflict earlier in the year that caused significant casualties and displacement. Key outcomes of the peace deal include the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers from Thai custody and a commitment to disarm border regions by removing heavy military equipment. Reports indicate that President Trump’s strategic use of trade leverage, specifically the threat of tariffs, was instrumental in bringing both nations to the negotiating table. This agreement underscores the active involvement of the US in fostering regional stability.
