Ukraine has initiated critical peace discussions with the United States, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressing his hope for a “dignified end” to the protracted conflict. A prominent Ukrainian delegation, led by Rustem Umerov, arrived in the US to engage in talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Presidential advisor Jaresh Kushner is also part of the high-level discussions, emphasizing the US’ diplomatic engagement.

President Zelenskyy articulated his optimism on X, noting the US’ “constructive approach” as a positive sign for achieving peace. He confirmed that the Ukrainian delegation has received clear directives to swiftly outline the necessary steps for war termination and anticipates productive meetings. “The American side is demonstrating a constructive approach, and in the coming days it is feasible to flesh out the steps to determine how to bring the war to a dignified end,” Zelenskyy posted. He added that Ukraine is working towards “a dignified peace.”

These negotiations unfold against a backdrop of continued violence, with Zelenskyy reporting extensive Russian attacks. Russian President Vladimir Putin, while acknowledging the US peace plan’s potential as a groundwork for future agreements, has reiterated demands for Ukrainian troop withdrawal from occupied territories. Putin also indicated that a US delegation, headed by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, is expected in Moscow for further dialogue.
