New Delhi’s political circles are abuzz with congratulations for Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman following his party’s sweeping victory in the country’s parliamentary elections. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge led the chorus from India, extending heartfelt wishes on social media platform X.
In a strongly worded post, Kharge hailed the historic triumph, stating, ‘On behalf of the Indian National Congress, I congratulate Tarique Rahman and BNP on their victory in the Bangladesh parliamentary elections. India and Bangladesh share deep ties rooted in history, language, culture, and more.’
He emphasized India’s unwavering support for a democratic Bangladesh, adding, ‘For the stability and peace of our region, all Indians will always back a democratic, progressive Bangladesh that takes everyone along.’
This endorsement comes hot on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s own message of support. PM Modi posted on X, praising BNP’s massive win as a testament to the people’s faith in Rahman’s leadership. ‘India stands with a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh,’ he affirmed, expressing eagerness to strengthen bilateral ties and pursue shared development goals.
Local media reports paint a picture of dominance for BNP and its allies. According to ‘The Daily Star,’ the coalition secured 208 seats out of those counted so far, comfortably crossing the majority mark with counting ongoing for the remaining constituencies. With 284 seats tallied, the path to forming a new government is clear.
Sources cited by Bangladeshi daily ‘Jugantor’ indicate Tarique Rahman is poised to become Prime Minister, marking the return of a male PM after nearly 35 years. In a notable upset in Dhaka-17, Rahman clinched victory with 72,699 votes against Jamaat-e-Islami rival S.M. Khaliduzzaman’s 68,300. He also triumphed in Bogra-6, amassing 216,284 votes to defeat Abidur Rahman Sohail’s 97,626.
Rahman, son of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman, assumed leadership after his mother, ex-PM Khaleda Zia, passed away in December. Post-voting, he exuded confidence, predicting a 100% victory. This win signals a new chapter for Bangladesh, with India closely watching the implications for regional dynamics.
