Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is reportedly taking shelter in a bunker due to ongoing Israeli attacks. Recent reports suggest Khamenei has nominated potential successors, highlighting the seriousness of the current situation. He is communicating with his commanders through a trusted aide and has halted electronic communications to evade tracking. The New York Times reports that Khamenei has named three senior clerics as potential successors, a move designed to facilitate an expedited transition and maintain stability. The Israeli attacks have caused significant damage, marking the most severe conflict since the Iran-Iraq war. Despite retaliatory actions by Iran, the nation’s leaders are preparing for different outcomes and monitoring any potential involvement by the United States. The selection process for the next supreme leader, typically a lengthy one, is being expedited to ensure a smooth transition. Vali Nasr stresses the importance of preserving the state. The Supreme Leader holds considerable power, including authority over the armed forces, judiciary, parliament, and religious institutions. Notably, Mojtaba, Khamenei’s son, is not among the reported candidates.
