Tehran has plunged into grief following the official confirmation of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death in US-Israel strikes. State media broke the news on Sunday morning, revealing that the long-time leader perished amid escalating airstrikes targeting Iranian leadership.

In response, the Iranian government immediately announced a 40-day mourning period across the nation. Flags will fly at half-mast, public gatherings will honor the fallen leader, and religious ceremonies will mark this somber time. The decree underscores the profound shock rippling through the Islamic Republic.

Tragedy extended beyond Khamenei, as Fars News Agency reported the deaths of four relatives—including his daughter, grandson, and son-in-law—in the same attacks. These losses compound the leadership vacuum at a critical juncture.

Global reactions poured in swiftly. Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated bluntly that his nation would not mourn Khamenei’s passing. ‘He was responsible for ballistic missile programs, nuclear ambitions, support for armed proxies, and brutal violence against his own people,’ Albanese told reporters. He highlighted Khamenei’s role in plotting attacks on Australian soil, vowing no sympathy for such a figure.

US President Donald Trump celebrated the development on Truth Social, calling it the ‘biggest opportunity’ for Iranians to reclaim their country. In a detailed statement, Trump described Khamenei as one of history’s worst tyrants, crediting advanced US intelligence and Israeli cooperation for the precision strike. ‘Justice has been served for the Iranian people and all great Americans harmed by Khamenei’s bloodthirsty regime,’ he declared.

Trump reaffirmed his commitment to a sustained military campaign, promising relentless heavy bombing until peace is secured in the Middle East and beyond. He reiterated calls for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, armed forces, and police to surrender weapons in exchange for immunity, signaling no let-up in pressure.

As Iran grapples with this seismic shift, questions swirl about succession, regional stability, and the future of its nuclear program. The world watches tensely as Tehran navigates uncharted waters without its paramount leader.
