    Justice Br Gavai: New Delhi. Senior Supreme Court Justice Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai will be the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). Notification in this regard has been issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India on Tuesday. Under Article 124 (2) of the Constitution, the President has approved his appointment.

    Justice Gawai will take over as the 52nd Chief Justice of India from 14 May 2025. He will take this responsibility after the retirement of the current Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna. Justice Gawai will be the second Chief Justice of the country coming from the Scheduled Caste community, before that in 2007, Justice K.K. Yes. Balakrishnan took this responsibility.

    Justice Gawai’s legal journey (justice br Gavai)

    Justice Gawai was born on 24 November 1960 in Amravati, Maharashtra. He started advocacy on 16 March 1985 and was appointed as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court on 12 November 2005. In May 2019, he was made a judge of the Supreme Court. During his judicial career, he was part of many constitutional benches and participated in many historical decisions.

    Important role played in historical decisions

    Article 370: Justice Gawai was part of the five-member bench that unanimously valued the Central Government’s decision to remove Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. This decision was historically related to ending the special status of the state.

    Election Bond: He was also included in the constitutional bench that declared the electoral bond brought for political funding unconstitutional.

    Demonetisation: When the case reached the Supreme Court on demonetisation of 2016, the five -member bench valued the central government’s decision with a majority of 4: 1. Justice Gawai was also in favor of the majority in this decision.

    Sub-classification in reservation: Justice Gawai was also included in the seven-member constitution bench, which decided with a majority of 6: 1 that the state governments can submit the backward classes within the scheduled castes. This decision was considered an important milestone in the field of social justice.
