Shigeru Ishiba, the Prime Minister of Japan, will resign from his position. This decision is intended to avert a split within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Ishiba’s resignation will occur within a year of his appointment as Prime Minister. The pressure for his resignation increased after the LDP’s significant losses in the parliamentary elections held in July. However, Ishiba has not specified when his resignation will take effect.
Ishiba was appointed Prime Minister last October. For the past month, he has been dealing with challenges from right-wing factions within his own party. The coalition led by Ishiba did not secure a majority in the upper house, which has 248 seats, in the July parliamentary elections.
