New Delhi witnessed a significant diplomatic engagement on Monday as India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar held talks with Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie. The meeting took place at Hotel ITC Maurya, marking a key highlight of the Seychelles leader’s six-day state visit to India, which began on February 5 and concludes on February 10.
President Herminie, accompanied by his wife Veronique Herminie, arrived in India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, underscoring decades of multifaceted bilateral ties. The president flew in from Mumbai to Delhi on Sunday, setting the stage for high-level discussions focused on strengthening economic prosperity, maritime security, and regional cooperation.
Dr. Jaishankar shared his enthusiasm on social media platform X, stating, ‘Delighted to meet President Dr. Patrick Herminie of the Republic of Seychelles in Delhi today. As maritime neighbours, we value their support in advancing Vision Sagarmala for economic prosperity and security in this region. I am confident that his meeting with PM Narendra Modi will open new avenues for our partnership.’
The Ministry of External Affairs echoed this sentiment on X, welcoming the president to Chennai earlier in the visit and celebrating the milestone of 50 years of India-Seychelles relations. This is Herminie’s first state visit to India since assuming office in October 2025.
Following the meeting with Jaishankar at 9:45 AM, President Herminie’s packed schedule included a 4:30 PM rendezvous with the Vice President at the same venue, followed by a 7 PM call on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. On Tuesday, he is slated to visit the Taj Mahal at 10 AM before departing Delhi at 9:30 PM.
This visit reinforces India’s strategic outreach in the Indian Ocean region, with Seychelles playing a pivotal role as a maritime neighbor. Discussions are expected to delve into enhancing cooperation in maritime security, economic development, and shared visions for regional stability, promising deeper ties in the years ahead.
