New Delhi’s diplomatic ties with Israel have reached new heights following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent two-day visit to the nation. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Israel’s Consul General in Mumbai, Yigal Revach, emphasized the deepening bond between the two countries, spotlighting efforts to advance a free trade agreement.
Revach highlighted the longstanding friendship between PM Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which dates back to Modi’s days as Gujarat Chief Minister. ‘Their personal rapport has been instrumental in strengthening bilateral relations,’ he noted. During the visit, Modi’s interactions with Israeli parliament members, the Indian diaspora, and journalists drew widespread admiration for India’s support amid recent challenges.
The conferment of Israel’s highest civilian honor on Modi was a pivotal moment. ‘This prestigious award from the Knesset recognizes not only Modi’s decade-long contributions to India but also his pivotal role in elevating India-Israel diplomatic ties,’ Revach stated.
Defense cooperation remains a cornerstone, driven by shared experiences with terrorism in volatile regions. Revach pointed to Modi’s condemnation of the October 7 attacks and Israel’s unwavering support against terror. Collaborative projects include advanced air-launched ballistic missiles, poised to bolster India’s defense capabilities.
Beyond defense, partnerships span space, energy, cyber, science, education, water management, AI, fintech, quantum technology, biotechnology, and semiconductors. Revach stressed the importance of joint development and production, with active negotiations for a free trade agreement to unlock economic potential.
Modi’s visit, his third to Israel including his prior trip as Chief Minister, was met with immense warmth, reflecting Israel’s view of India as a global superpower and the world’s largest democracy. This unique connection between the leaders promises a bright future for bilateral relations.
