Tehran plunged into mourning on March 1 as Iran announced a 40-day period of grief following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The sacred Imam Reza Shrine hoisted a black flag, symbolizing profound loss. In a poignant gesture, the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi lowered its flag to half-mast, reflecting the nation’s sorrow.

The embassy issued a heartfelt statement on social media platform X, condemning what it described as brutal attacks by the United States and the ‘Zionist regime’ of Israel. ‘The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in India expresses deep grief over the martyrdom of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei following the cruel and criminal assaults by America and the Jewish Zionist government,’ it read.

Calling on the global community, the embassy urged all nations to denounce this ‘open crime’ and not remain silent in the face of lawlessness. It warned that the perpetrators—namely the US government and the occupying Zionist regime—would bear the full consequences of their unforgivable act.

Iran vowed to continue on its path with strength and resolve. ‘The proud nation of Iran will proceed with power, courage, and firm determination. No interference in our affairs will be tolerated. The sacred blood of martyrs will only strengthen the Iranian people’s resolve to defend their freedom, dignity, and lofty ideals,’ the statement affirmed.

Senior officials ramped up rhetoric against the accused nations. Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and advisor to Khamenei, declared, ‘The Americans have stabbed the Iranian people in the heart, and we will stab them in theirs.’ He promised a robust military response, emphasizing that attackers cannot simply flee.

Larijani announced plans for a temporary leadership structure involving the president and judiciary head. Iran reassured regional leaders of no intent for broader conflict but affirmed continued targeting of US bases in the Middle East. ‘This must make it clear forever that America cannot intimidate Iran,’ he asserted.

As the world watches, Iran’s resolve hardens amid vows of retaliation, marking a tense new chapter in regional geopolitics.
