Shabana Mahmood, a Labour Party MP, has been appointed as the UK Home Secretary by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This marks a first, as Mahmood is the first Muslim woman to hold this office. Born in Birmingham in 1980, she was raised with her twin brother, and her family originates from Mirpur, Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Before her political career, Mahmood studied law at Oxford University’s Lincoln College and is a qualified solicitor. As Home Secretary, she will be responsible for matters relating to police, security, and immigration. She is known for her strong stance on immigration and will be handling issues related to refugees and deportations.
